Artist Statement

My interest is in illuminating a personal and iconoclastic form of speculative realism. The forms that emerge in my paintings and whistles may originate in reality, but the concepts and meanings arrive through dreams or in that wakeful wandering across expanses of imagination, that pleasant state called
the daydream.

Every work I create has a story and each story has successively deeper underlying stories. The process is much like beach walking with one foot on land and the other in the water. I seek the border zone where the conscious mind drifts sequentially into the subconscious and out again, a place rich with color, visions, and unexpected meaning.

My clay work — the whistles, are derived from the same source. The multi-note whistles have won awards and are in collections worldwide. My mother created ethereal singing birds, but in my hands the clay is quickly hijacked by my storytelling impulse. If I make a bird, as I was taught to do, it is quickly loaded with passengers and a heavy load of meaning.

Though I have no formal art training, the creative process has dominated my life.
