Back Roads Readings was created to bring esteemed poets and writers, both local and regional, to read their work to people in the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont. Readings are followed by a book signing and reception, and are held in HCA’s event tent or theater, weather dependent.

Galway Kinnell, (1927-2014), winner of both the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award for his Selected Poems, and recipient of a MacArthur Genius Grant, was Vermont State Poet from 1989 to 1993. He published ten books of poetry, a novella, and several books of translations. For many years, he enriched the life of American culture through his poems, his teaching, his devotion to the tribe of poets, and his indelibly powerful public readings. At this event his poet friends, Michael Collier, Jody Gladding, Major Jackson, Mirah Kozodoy and Ellen Bryant Voigt will read their favorite poems from his work.
