Artist Statement

I wanted to see what would happen if I had a show of my paintings in this beautiful qspace. Such big walls. What would I paint? What is my subject matter? I enjoy looking at the world. I like watching people sitting around, cats doing whatever, dogs running through the grass, bodies at the beach and always animals.

And I love color.

I keep sketchbooks where I make journal entries about daily life. There is a lot of discussion of the creative process in these pages and thoughts about what I’m working on and how it’s going. Some of these drawings become paintings—paintings that rarely resemble the drawings. The paintings always go in some other direction: a group of people becomes a lone sitter or a dog on a couch keeps getting his couch moved and reupholstered. I am inspired by life but I don’t work from life. I like to make things up.

Every painting feels like an experiment in making an image I want to see.

What is my art about? What am I trying to do? What will my paintings look like? I really want to see what will happen next.
