My interest is in illuminating a personal and iconoclastic form of speculative realism. Every work I create has a story and each story has successively deeper underlying stories. The process is much like beach walking with one foot on land and the other in the water. I seek the border zone where the conscious mind drifts sequentially into the subconscious and out again, a place rich with color, visions, and unexpected meaning.
My clay work — the whistles, are derived from the same source. The multi-note whistles have won awards and are in collections worldwide. My mother created ethereal singing birds, but in my hands the clay is quickly hijacked by my storytelling impulse. If I make a bird, as I was taught to do, it is quickly loaded with passengers and a heavy load of meaning.
Though I have no formal art training, the creative process has dominated my life.
