Back Roads Readings was created to bring esteemed poets and writers, both local and regional, to read their work to people in the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont. Readings are followed by a book signing and reception, and are held in HCA’s event tent or theater, weather dependent.

Matthew Olzmann is the author of Constellation Route, (Alice James Books) as well as two previous collections of poetry: Mezzanines and Contradictions in the Design. A recipient of fellowships from Kundiman, MacDowell, and the National Endowment for the Arts, Olzmann’s poems have appeared in the New York Times, Best American Poetry, The Pushcart Prizes, Kenyon Review, and elsewhere. He is an assistant professor at Dartmouth College and also teaches in the MFA Program for Writers at Warren Wilson College.

Vievee Francis is the author of four books of poetry: including Forest Primeval (winner of the Hurston Wright Legacy Award and the Kingsley-Tufts Award) and her latest book of poetry, The Shared World (Northwestern University Press). She received the 2021 Aiken Taylor Award for Modern American Poetry and a Guggenheim Fellowship in 2024. Her work has appeared in Poetry, Harvard Review, Best American Poetry, and spin.com and elsewhere. She is currently an Associate Professor of English and Creative Writing at Dartmouth College.
